It’s Going to be a Cold, Dollhouseless November

23 10 2009

If you didn’t see tonight’s episode of Dollhouse… what am I saying… OF COURSE you saw tonight’s episode of Dollhouse!! It’s what I told you to do! So you know, then, that it was an ubermegaload of television fantasticness!

You also know, then, that it has been bumped for sweeps all November, because Fox is a poopypants jerkface when it comes to outstanding television, and they’d apparently rather air reruns of shows I do not watch. And, I promise you this, I will continue to NOT be watching them in the absence of Dollhouse, Fox Broadcasting, I will not!

Anyway, rant over, here’s the Dollhouseless November plan: buy the DVDs, or download the episodes over a legitimate service like iTunes, and rewatch season 1 and the aired episodes of season 2. Invite your cooler friends over and get them caught up. Offer free food as a means to get them there if you have to, they will thank you in the end, and your reward will be a NOT canceled Dollhouse.

Anyway, the crux of this plan is to get three people hooked on what we already know is quality tv. Then, come December’s double Dollhouse days, we triple the ratings! Excuse me, my math is terrible.. that’s QUADRUPLE the ratings!

Ok, I’m obviously reaching for the stars here, but if you and everyone else who watches Dollhouse gets even one other person into it, that’s double the viewership, and that’s something Fox can’t say no to… or at least will make them pause before they throw it on the chopping block.

Meanwhile, you can still get the show on the nominees list for a People’s Choice Award, here.

Also, Dollhouse Halloween costume ideas, anyone?

Urgent: DOLLHOUSE!

22 10 2009

Ok guys, I’m getting a little freaked out. Dollhouse has been shelved through all of November, then is scheduled for back2back episode nights all through December. And, although December will be AWESOME for it!, it probably means Fox is not having happy thoughts about our show. Sad face!

BUT it’s not bloody well over til the hot dolls in track pants sing! Obviously, we need to get their ratings up. First, tomorrow will be the last episode until December’s doubles, so for the love of Joss, WATCH IT! You can sit in one Friday night, I promise it won’t kill you. And what else would you watch, anyway? Ghost Whisperer? Guffaw!

Second, the People’s Choice Awards are holding online nominee voting – if that’s worded confusingly, what I mean is, you can pick from a bunch of shows (or actors, artists, etc, in other categories) to help the lovely folks at the PCAs narrow down their nominee lists. You have the option of writing in a nominee as well, but listen to this: You don’t even have to! Dollhouse is actually an option to choose under the Best Sci-Fi category! Woot woot!!

So, might I suggest, go there right now, and pick it! You get to pick 5, so it’s not even like I’m asking you to forgo nominating your actual favourite. For instance, I got to pick Supernatural AND Dollhouse! I’m over the moon!

What are you waiting for?! GO GO GO!!! Save my show! Before you have to listen to me rant and whine like I did with the Sarah Connor Chronicles!!

Post Comic Con Blues

29 07 2009

Due to extreme amounts of fun and endless things to do, I really didn’t get to blog as much as I would’ve like while at Comic Con, even with the free wifi throughout the Convention Centre. Consequently, I can’t possibly review everything I wanted to, so I’ll just stick to the best of the best.

The Robot Chicken panel, as I already mentioned, was funny as hell. I’ve been walking around replaying Breckin Meyer doing his Lindsay Lohan voice ever since. I actually lol’ed just thinking about it right now. That was on Thursday, as was the amazing screening of Dr. Horrible`s Sing Along Blog, to which Felicia Day, Maurissa Tancharoen, Jed and Zack Whedon showed up. If you don`t know who they are, might I suggest watching Dr. Horrible already. Great show, and great night!!

The day I spent in Ballroom 20 (Friday) was probably the best day ever of life. I went first thing in the morning to make sure I was in and well situated for the panels I wanted to see in the afternoon. As a byproduct of the wait, I got to see previews and discussions for Stargate Universe and Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, as well as the upcoming Battlestar-related Caprica tv series. I’ve never really gotten into either Stargate or Battlestar (though I loved the Stargate movie) but I was pretty intrigued by both panels, and I think I will finally get off my ass and watch Battlestar.

Following those panels was the cast from The Big Bang Theory. I adore the show, and as I have publicly admitted on many occasions, I am happily in love with Sheldon Cooper while fully understanding that he is not a real person. Obviously, the panel was amazing and I enjoyed myself immensely, but what impressed me most was how good looking they all are in person. Not that they are unattractive on the show by any means, but in real life, they’re all super hot! I don’t know how they can stand working together and remain professional, I’d be in trouble for shamelessly hitting on my coworkers for sure. The best part, though, was the actor who plays my beloved Sheldon. Jim Parsons is delightful! He’s clever and witty, and seemingly quite humble. My love for the fictional character was promptly transformed into a celebrity crush. I can even call him Jim now, instead of Sheldon!

I also sat through the panel for 24, which was cool. My fellow Canadian Kiefer Sutherland is still handsome as can be, and the girl who plays Chloe O’Brian (Mary Lynn Rajskub) was there. I like her. After 24 came Bones, which was kinda boring since I don’t watch it and David Boreanaz wasn’t even there. But no bother; I was waiting for Dollhouse, and I would have sat through pretty much anything. The previously un-aired 13th episode of Dollhouse was AMAZING! My gal Felicia Day was in it; she’s super cute, plus mega talented. The episode itself was intense, and the screening was followed up with a full hour and a half q&a with Joss Whedon and Eliza Dushku. Joss is so cool I can’t even stand it. Eliza is absolutely stunning and was most gracious with all the compliments she received. One adorable kid really thought she was Echo and asked how she could be in the show and in movies at the same time. Cute! Toward the end of the q&a, the actors who play Sierra (Dichen Lachman) and Topher (Fran Kranz) came out as well. He’s hot. There, I said it! I officially cannot wait for next season.

That brings me to Saturday, which I mostly spent in line for the Masquerade. I wore my super cool Silk Spectre II costume all day (photos below). Loads and loads of people took my picture. I felt like a minor celebrity and it was a lot of fun. I also took loads and loads of pictures of other people in costume, which was also fun. The Masquerade itself was pretty cool, though I’m not sure it was worth the wait and missing out on other stuff I would have liked to do – like get my Buffy comics autographed by Jane Espenson and Georges Jeanty. Ah, well, there’s always next year, right? Talents like those aren’t going anywhere any time soon, particularly since Espenson is working on Caprica, which is bound to be huge in 2010.

I did thoroughly enjoy some of the contestants in the Masquerade though, especially Bring it On: Rock the Mouse. If you missed it, check out the video on YouTube, though it doesn’t do the live show any justice at all. My honourable mention would go to Welcome to the Dollhouse, which was highly entertaining and so well done. It’s also on YouTube, but again, the video hardly gives the full effect. And finally, I fully appreciated the She-ra entry, because I loved her when I was young, and they did a wicked job on the costumes. YouTube again for the win on that video. (I truly love YouTube.)

And then, Sunday. Also known as The Day of My Biggest Disappointment, when Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles did not magically appear for the Supernatural panel. Not that they were supposed to, they were never on the schedule, I was just holding out hope that they might show up and surprise us all. No dice, however. The panel was still great though, everyone was pretty funny, it was cool to see the series creator (Eric Kripke), and we got a few good spoilers. The prophet Chuck is still around, which I love because he’s funny, and there was a lot of talk about Castiel’s changing role in season 5. The scene from Season 5, Episode 1 that they showed was pretty awesome as well. Also, Misha Collins (whom I’ve just realized I’ve been misspelling his name the past few weeks – sorry!) is super hot in person, fyi.

Whew. That takes care of that. Now for some awesome pics of me in my costume, some other cool costumes, and a hot guy dressed as Wolverine – proof hot guy nerds DO exist!!

Shameless Plug: Big, big thanks to Daniela Pizarro at Hypercube Apparel for making at kick ass costume! Everyone loved it! Daniela is a super talented designer based here in Toronto, Canada. Check out her website, and then find her clothes at The Fashion District on Queen West.

Sigh… back to reality and papers due next week. Sad face. On the bright side, only 11 months and three plus a little bit weeks until Comic-Con!!

An update from the Con!

24 07 2009

UberFanGirl is in nerdheaven!!

Met Felicia Day, she’s super cute! Laughed my arse off at the Robot Chicken panel, Breckin Meyer is perhaps the funniest person alive. Also, Seth Green = <3. Loads of costumed attendees, including my favs Daisy, Waluigi, and Sheik. Wifi in the lines, so no wasted time! Sang along with Dr Horrible's Sing Along Blog. And drooled over tonnes of merch I'd love to have, the highlight of which was a full size and usable Hylian shield.

Presently camped out in Ballroom 20 waiting for The Big Bang Theory panel (Sheldon!), Dollhouse, and Joss Whedon Q&A. Today is a good day to be a hug nerd. Loves it!!

Making difficult decisions the week before Comic Con

15 07 2009

One week until San Diego Comic Con 2009! It’s enough to make a fangirl squeal with delight.

Literally, actually, *squeeeeeeeee!!*

So the programming schedule is of course out, complete with the autographs and films schedules. It took a while, but I have picked out all my must-sees. This was not an easy task, I tell you! There is, if you will pardon the expression, so much to do, and so little time. Nevertheless, here are my highlights-to-be, what I expected, what I was pleasantly surprised by, what I wont have time for, and (gasp) what – or, should I say, whom – I was severely disappointed to not see on the schedule:

The Satisfyingly Expected:

Although this will actually be my first trip to the Con, (shhhh, that doesn’t make me any less of a fangirl!) there were a bunch of things I had expected to find on the program. Even not having been before, I am familiar enough with the goings on at SDCC, plus I’ve jealously drooled over media coverage in previous years (a thank you, YouTube), then I’ve also made sure to be hip to the rumours since I bought my pass in February. So things I was expecting include panels on all the current on-air sci-fi tv programs: Heroes, Fringe, True Blood, Smallville, Supernatural, etc. I also knew to expect a lot of programming content based around my idol, Mr Joss Whedon. To that end, there will be a special screening of the unaired 13th episode of Dollhouse, which I have been super psyched about since I finished watching season one. Also, I was previously aware of the very popular weekend closer, the Buffy musical epi, Once More, With Feeling. I’m looking forward to dancing in the aisles with my dry cleaning! And, of course, I suspected I might also see lots and lots of programming having to do with comics ;)

The Pleasant Surprises:

One thing I did not expect to see, however, was a special presentation of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-Long Blog! I knew they had shown it at last year’s Con, but I wasn’t aware it was so loved that they’d bring it back again. I cannot tell you how happy this makes me; the California Browncoats surely do know what the fans like best! Wondering if we’ll catch a glimpse of TheRealNPH; that would so make my life! Other little surprises include a look at the upcoming film, The Hobbit – for whatever reason, I was not expecting it?! Fail on my part. Then there’s a really cool panel discussing Quantum Quest, which, if you haven’t heard, is set to be a mind blowing film featuring 3D/CGI/real imagery taken from from actual frickin space missions, and voiced over by some of the most awesomest people EVER! (I’m not excited about this at all, if you can’t tell.) Uhhh, where was I… oh yeah, more surprises like Seth Green chatting about Robot Chicken, heart heart heart! My boss thinks I should marry him, and then we will have the nerdiest kids ever. I’m cool with that. And theeennn, an academic discussion on the anthropological themes in Star Trek, where I suspect I might also be able to meet a potential future husband. And finally, the best surprise of all, the cast and crew of  The Big Bang Theory! I don’t even know how to adequately express how blown away I was to see that on the schedule. I will be in the same room as Sheldon Cooper!!! *eeeeeks!* <3

The Conflictingly Scheduled:

Sadly, Comic Con is only 4 days long. Well, actually it’s 5 days long if you’re cool like me and get to go to Wednesday’s Preview Night, but I digress… With such a limit on time, there were bound to be conflicts in the schedule, and so I will be forced to pass some things by. This time. One of the bigger hurts caused by such timing issues is missing out on Summit Entertainment’s sneak peeks at Astro Boy and New Moon. Astro Boy is such a flash back to my early, early childhood, and New Moon is, well, hot boys! Unfortunately, it cuts too close to Robot Chicken, and I heart Seth Green way more than any of those Twilight guys. Less upsetting, but nonetheless mildly sad face inducing, is having to miss out on the Archies Comics: Archie Marries Veronica panel. I haven’t really read Archie much since I was probably 13 or so, but this business of him proposing to Veronica is pretty huge. And upsetting. Poor Betty. But the panel starts too close to the ending of The Hobbit, so I’ll hafta let it go. Probably for the best, I’m pretty mad at Archie Andrews right now. I would also really have loved to attend Futurama’s Life or Death live decision making extraordinaire, if only to scowl at the dude from Fox because I am still angry about the Sarah Connor Chronicles debacle (though I haven’t given up hope yet, and neither have my friends over at savethescc.com), but it just isn’t in the cards. The Futurama event conflicts with the previously mentioned Quantum Quest, and I can’t have that!

The MAJOR Disappointment:

There was just the one, but I can’t even stress how MAJOR it is! The Supernatural Screening and Q&A seems to be lacking two names. Where are the stars of the show?! Ok, Bobby and Castiel (yum!) are there… but wtf, Sam and Dean?! I had to stare at the little blurb for a full two or three minutes, checking and rechecking. But, nope! No Jensen. No Jared. As my favourite still-running tv show, I won’t lie, of all the potentially exciting memories-to-be, I was MOST looking forward to seeing my boys. Alas, I can only hope that their names are not there because they are unconfirmed and the powers that be at Comic Con have decided it is better to leave them off than to have to severley disappoint and possibly anger fans AT the Con. This does not help the hole in my heart RIGHT NOW though. If I wasn’t so blessedly excited to see the guys from The Big Bang Theory on the programming schedule, I might actually be crying right now. *wipes a single, stray tear*

The Still Undecided:

And so I have one last conundrum… Saturday night: Watchmen or the Masquerade?! Two huge events. The first is the world premier of the director’s cut of Watchmen, which, admittedly, I will be able to see when it comes out on DVD. However, this screening will featuer Zack Snyder LIVE commentating. Dude. That’s huge. And Dave Gibbons and Jackie Earle Haley will be there too! AND, as if I could even take all that in one go, they will be starting the night with a sneak peek of Batman: Arkham Asylum along with a panel led by the voice actors – one of which is Mark Hamill. SRSLY. *Geekasm!* The Masquerade of course doesn’t have any of these overly awesome things happening, but it is THE Masquerade. It is, apparently, an amazing sight to see, with all the costumes and music and choreographed presentations… I’m not in it, because I’m shy like that, but I AM bringing a costume (which I had made for me, and will gush about in a separate blog at a later date) and it would probably be fun to wear it there and watch the show with a whole bunch of other people who love costuming too.

So what to do?! I have no idea.

6 Weeks ‘Til Comic Con and a New Tattoo

12 06 2009

The two are unrelated, but both noteworthy, among other things…

With just six weeks left of the longest wait of life, I am having trouble concentrating on anything else. As such I am ages behind on an essay due in about 16 hours. I don’t think I can manage a coherent blog, so have some highlights of this week past:

I finished up SCC. A+ for all actors, writers, directors, etc.. Stupid Fox. Special Heart for Summer Glau. She’s now on the “Must See” list, behind only Joss Whedon and Jensen Ackles.

Just started Dollhouse. That’s right, just. “Gawd, get in the Know, UberFanGirl”. I know. I apologize to Joss, Eliza. I am well into it now, though. And I heard a delicious rumour episode 13 is being screened at Comic Con ;)

Got a new tattoo. Triforce. Left wrist. I’m shit-hot.

Oh, sat a little diddy called the LSAT. Didn’t cancel my score on the scene, so I guess that’s good. Score to be emailed in a few weeks. Probably still rewrite in September, for good measure.

Read this awesome blog by this (girl?) who comments on Twilight through hilariously re-written or extended chapters. Please try not to have milk come out your nose.

And that’s all she wrote,

Eff is for Fox: Another Terminator post

30 05 2009

Eff as in “Eff You Fox TV!” but more on that below…

First, I saw Terminator: Salvation. My official opinion is that the critics are filthy liars, but you should know that by now. Salvation, or T4, as I prefer, was actually great. The story line was neither confusing nor poorly written. Perhaps if one has never seen any of the previous three films, a few concepts might be lost; terminators, characters, Judgment Day. But seriously, what business do you have reviewing films if you’ve never seen The Terminator?! Or, conversely, if you HAVE seen The Terminator, but still had trouble following the plot of Salvation, you are probably exceptionally stupid and should promptly give up your job as a film critic. Although, I suppose we only have the individuals responsible for giving you meaningful employment as a film critic to blame.

Enough reference to those idiots, I don’t want to give them any more word time than necessary. I repeat: Salvation was actually great. Ok, no Star Trek, I readily admit. But a action flick gem of 2009 nonetheless, and a satisfying addition to the Terminator franchise. Certainly it is better than Rise of the Machines. *Please note, I actually enjoyed T3; though it is the least enjoyable of the four films, the final scene with John Connor stepping up to his role as leader of what is to become the Resistance is worth the age-related inaccuracies and toleration of Clarie Danes. Also, though some may disagree, I liked that the Terminator was able to override his programming, adding another layer to the learning capabilities of AI. This ability of self-determination later plays a key kick-ass role in the plot of The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Back to T4 now… my ultimate reason for loving this movie was that it gave us a look at the fruit of the franchise: The War Against the Machines. The reason the other three movies exist. In the previous three films, we’re seeing essentially “the past”. The main plot elements – the machines, Skynet, Judgment Day, John Connor – come from our future, but as far as the overarching story is concerned, they are the present. Maybe I`m not explaining this right. Kyle Reese and the various terminators are sent to the past, and this is the part of the story we see, but the real story exists in the future, and now we finally get to see it in more than just flashes. I don`t know about you, but for me, this is a huge payoff after 25 years of wondering what it would be like in a post-Judgment Day world. I actually look forward to the sequel they so obviously set up, assuming they do it well.

My favourite part of the film though was seeing a young Kyle Reese. I`ve had a pseudo-crush on the character my whole life. I say pseudo, because I was too young to really have a crush on him when I first saw The Terminator (I was 3 when it came out, probably 5 before I really took notice of it). But he`s always been there; Sarah`s, and in turn John`s, hero. It wasn`t until I was older that I really thought about him in a crushy way, and even then, I loved John more. But I digress from where I was going with this point. Since looking forward to seeing a new portrayal of John Connor was out of the question, due to the casting of creepo Christian Bale, I was most excited to see how a younger, future version of Kyle Reese would turn out.

And A+ on that casting job guys! Obviously I saw Anton Yelchin in Star Trek a few weeks ago, but I had no idea he was in Salvation. I didn`t really look into the Salvation cast all that much due to my Bale-related pre-disappointment, so I had no idea I would be getting Break-out Actor 2009 Part Two (you heard it hear first!). Holy crap, he`s awesome! Too young for me, so it`s not even about the hot factor – though he is a cute kid. But Yelchin is just a brilliant actor. I YouTubed some clips from tv shows he`s been in, and his awesomeness is consistent. I cannot wait to see him in other stuff.

By the way, as much disdain as I had for the Bale-Connor portrayal, it actually wasn`t half bad. I was creeped out at first, but by the end I warmed up to him a bit. I still would have loved it more if he wasn`t there at all, but I can live with it. If nothing else, my love for John Connor helped me get over my fear of Christian Bale, so I guess it can only be called a Win. How sweet would it have been, though, to see a revived Ed Furlong?! Maybe that`s just me…

And since I am always about the hot factor, and clearly didn`t get it from Bale or too-young Yelchin, I must add that I DID get it from Sam Worthington. Yum, indeed! Could do with a little work on his American accent, but I excuse him. In my head, Marcus Wright is actually an Aussie-American immigrant, so it`s cool. Someone I went with asked if I preferred the hotness of Marcus as human or as machine, and I hold to my response: a little bit of both; I`m freaky like that. My friend actually replied that that response wasn`t even weird coming from me. It truly isn`t. I`m not above hearting on a machine, if he`s heart worthy (c.f. Jude Law`s Gigolo Joe in AI.)

Ok, so now that that is out of the way, I move on to the real point of this post, which is to poo-poo on Fox`s cancellation of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Riddle me this: in what right mind does a network drop a show that already has a cult following the week before the release of a film which is guaranteed to pique interest in said show? Like, seriously. I get that ratings were low-ish. I get that the season was already over. But they`re keeping Fringe, for eff sake, which is just not that good. Ok, ok, JJ Abrams. Star Trek. Point taken. And I certainly don`t want to see them drop Dollhouse, as it clings on for dear life, due to their past screwing-over of Joss Whedon, whom I adore. What, then, is the scheduling solution? I don`t know. But I DO know you shouldn`t cancel awesome shows. Then again, this is Fox we`re talking about, and canceling awesome shows seems to be their MO. How about axing shit like Don`t Forget the Lyrics, or So You Think You Can Dance, or anything else of the bore-fest that is reality TV? Gah!

I can only hope another network picks up SCC. I actually joined the Resistance this morning, and will spend my summer campaigning to save Sarah Connor. Check it out here. The CW would be an awesome candidate, not only because I`m able to get it for free with my rabbit ears, but because they have a tremendous history for taking on the unwanted but beloved cult hits. Plus they already have my favouritist on-air show, Supernatural. Personally, I`d squeeze out Smallville, which timeline-wise should be out already (Clarke is like 25 now and should be off donning those disallowed tights already!), and throw in SCC at 8pm Thursdays before Supernatural, so I can continue my glued-to-the-couch-Thursday tradition.

I don`t actually care what network picks it up though, I just want to be able to watch John Connor fight to save the future every week. Someone make it happen!
