The Boys Are Back! And so is UberFanGirl!

27 01 2010

Oh my goodness, it has been a while. I was on a leave of blogging-absence for personal reasons I won’t bore you with, but just know it was out of my control, and I hereby pledge to recommence clogging up the interwebs with more fangirly goodness.

Starting with my boys! They were on hiatus almost as long as I was, but they returned to us this Thursday past with an all new episode of semi-epic Winchester proportions. In Sam, Interrupted, Sam and Dean infiltrate a mental hospital (is that the PC term? Doubtful.) by pretending they are crazies (definitely not PC), which turns out to be super easy for them, as they only need to explain their “real life” situation in order to get admitted. Apparently being hunters of the supernatural who accidentally cause the apocalypse is unbelievable to those in the medical profession. Pfft.

The episode definitely had it’s funny moments (in a word, “PUDDING!”), but I have to say, and this is a hard one for me, folks, I was just a teeny, tiny bit disappointed. Gasp! Perhaps it was only down to waiting so long for a new episode – and a hearty, “Grrr,” to the CW for that one, btw – so I was too psyched up and nothing could’ve met my expectations? Or maybe it was because Castiel was only in it for like 2.5 seconds, and frankly, that is just not enough Cas to make up for our cold, two-month abandonment. But, also, I thought the wraith was a little lack-lustre, and the back-story of ex-huter Martin Creaser was too hastily dealt with.

That isn’t to say it was a terrible episode, by any means. I loved getting a little peak into the psyches of our boys, even if Sam’s was damn scary, and Dean’s was more than a little sad. It just wasn’t one of the best. And after the brain-melting awesomefest that was the previous episode (5.10, Abandon All Hope), I had hoped for better. I will continue to do so for this week. I have little fear I should be disappointed again.

In other news, during my long silence I met many a splendid geek milestone: I am finally a multi-console gamer, as I received a PS3 for Christmas (Arkham Asylum is every bit as kick-ass as I thought it would be); I finally watched every aired episode of Lost (LOVED it!) and now anxiously await Season 6; I finally started Battlestar Galactica and I am, of course, enjoying it thoroughly; annnnnd I got the New Super Mario Bros for Wii, which is a fan-damn-tastic mix of nostalgic fun meets rage-inducing difficulty. I hope to get to all these exciting topics in the near future, but I am presently looking for a job, so that hunt takes precedence over my extracurricular fangirling. Sad face.

Urgent: DOLLHOUSE!

22 10 2009

Ok guys, I’m getting a little freaked out. Dollhouse has been shelved through all of November, then is scheduled for back2back episode nights all through December. And, although December will be AWESOME for it!, it probably means Fox is not having happy thoughts about our show. Sad face!

BUT it’s not bloody well over til the hot dolls in track pants sing! Obviously, we need to get their ratings up. First, tomorrow will be the last episode until December’s doubles, so for the love of Joss, WATCH IT! You can sit in one Friday night, I promise it won’t kill you. And what else would you watch, anyway? Ghost Whisperer? Guffaw!

Second, the People’s Choice Awards are holding online nominee voting – if that’s worded confusingly, what I mean is, you can pick from a bunch of shows (or actors, artists, etc, in other categories) to help the lovely folks at the PCAs narrow down their nominee lists. You have the option of writing in a nominee as well, but listen to this: You don’t even have to! Dollhouse is actually an option to choose under the Best Sci-Fi category! Woot woot!!

So, might I suggest, go there right now, and pick it! You get to pick 5, so it’s not even like I’m asking you to forgo nominating your actual favourite. For instance, I got to pick Supernatural AND Dollhouse! I’m over the moon!

What are you waiting for?! GO GO GO!!! Save my show! Before you have to listen to me rant and whine like I did with the Sarah Connor Chronicles!!

It’s been a while…

19 10 2009

Many things are happening. I signed on for an undergrad victory lap. In case you are unfamiliar with the term, it means I will do a fifth year, instead of graduating in the usual four. Actually, I have all my credits to graduate, I just need some extra English credits in order to apply to do a Masters in teaching – law school is out; too much work, with not enough potential job satisfaction.

My tv shows have been riotous. Supernatural is so g-dang fantastic I can’t even begin a suitable review. Just watch it. Big Bang Theory is, of course, funny as ever. I’ve never really cared whether Penny and Leonard should get together or not, but it has made for interesting interactions between Sheldon and Penny. And goth-Wolowitz (Gothowitz, if you will) was actually pretty hot a few week back. Also, Dollhouse is heating up like nobody’s business, so I highly recommend getting in on it now before the season explodes and you have too much to catch up on!

In other news, the curling season has begun. That’s right, UberFanGirl is a curler! Not a very good one, but a curler nevertheless. I got some super sweet pink curling shoes and broom. Not going to lie, I feel that much more adorable when I curl with them.

And other than that, it’s same old, same old. School, work, schoolwork, and workschool. I am gutted about not having blogged in a while, but them’s the breaks when you’re a busy beaver such as I. I haven’t even seen Zombieland, if you can believe that! After MONTHS of waiting anxiously, wishing it would arrive sooner.. it finally does, and I aint got no time for it! Sad face.

SPOILER ALERT!

16 09 2009

Sooooo, it’s been a while, eh. Why? I had good reasons. I can’t remember them now. Something about working, and moving, annndd… I dunno. Life outside of school always seems a little hazy. But I’m back, and the good news is, so is Supernatural! Just in time to fill the void True Blood should have left. Normally I’d say, “Sad face”, right about now, in reference to the True Blood season ending. However, I’m not so sure I can manage a sad face right now, and please let me tell you why.

Oh, sorry. First, in case you haven`t guessed already: SPOILER ALERT!!!

Sigh. Let me start by saying that, until three weeks ago, True Blood was quickly becoming one of my favouritest shows evar! Between Eric and Godric, I was surrounded by hot. Jessica and Hoyt were simply the cutest couple of life (or, um, half life, half undead). Maryann was mysteriously charming, but deceptively evil, and strikingly gorgeous – the perfect villain. Then came the clusterfuck that was episode 11. Excuse my language, but seriously, wtf was that?! And the finale was even worse! Why? Why are you doing this to me, True Blood writers?! I feel like somebody stole my puppy and sent me his cute little puppy extremity in a package made out of confusing and stupid tv. Yeah, I said it.

Dramatics aside, let me back it up a minute, or several episodes actually, to episode 9. I think it was such a poor decision to kill off Godric. Although it was done very, very well – Eric made me cry! – they just could have done so much more with Godric’s character and with the subplot of the show in general. I really loved his comment on vampires having not evolved in the all the time he’s been one, and he could have interacted well with Bill’s “good vampire” image, which I’ve always thought lacked real explanation. Like, why is Bill good anyway, while no other vampires seem to be? It’s not like he has a soul or anything else that sets him apart from the rest of his kind. Godric’s own reformed goodness would have definitely lent depth to the idea that vampires don’t always have to be the Big Bad.

Ugh, Godric’s super sad death aside, things just went downhill all around after that. Well, except Jessica and Hoyt. They were the one thing I continued to look forward in the last few episodes, and Jessica in the truck with that old dude in the finale is the one story line I am interested to see how it pans out. But Maryanne got boring and kinda lame. She ended up barely even qualifying as evil, just, you know, deluded and creepy and immortal. Yes, the heart eating and giant meat-covered gift to her god were pretty gross, but I guess I was just hoping for more there.

Now Eric. Gah. Don’t even get me started. I am very, very disappointed in him. Not because it would appear he’s about to kill Bill (*giggles*), but because he’s in looooove with bloody Sookie Stackhouse! Sure, he claims he does not love humans, but I think we all know different. And that’s gross. I’m sorry, but Sookie is the most annoying person on the show. In fact, if it wasn’t for such a tremendous group of secondary characters, I don’t think I could put up with her at all. Eric could, and should, do so much better.

Which brings me to the worst part of the season finale. After the unnecessarily extended denouement (like, over half the episode), the last 3 minutes involved Bill pro… zzzzzzz……. what? Oh sorry, I fell asleep for a second there, it was so boring just thinking about it. Where was I? Right, right, so Bill proposes to Sookie, she’s unsure of everything (yawn), then while she’s in the bathroom composing herself, and deciding to say yes (shocker), Bill is abducted by a masked man or two – honestly I was only semi-paying attention. The fact of the matter is, I just don’t care! Sookie and Bill are the two least entertaining characters on the show. Get married, don’t get married. Bill dies, Bill doesn’t die. It’s all the same to me. And to try to cliff hang me using the least interesting hook ever.. well, FAIL. I am barely even wondering what will happen next.

You know, I can handle one or two less than stellar episodes, especially from a show that had me dieing week after week like True Blood did. But I need more from a season finale, especially from a show that had me dieing week after week like True Blood did. I suppose I will watch season three when it comes back, but only because I invested myself in two seasons already, and maybe because we might get to see Eric all naked again at some point. I sincerely hope they pick up the pace again though, otherwise I can see this going the way of Heroes. That is, I will completely lose interest and just stop watching.
In better tv news, the season premiere of Supernatural was PHENOMENAL! The end of season 4 made it apparent that these guys and gals know how to write a cliff hanger. Though, I guess you can’t get much of a better hook than Lucifer being raised from Hell. Either way, the wait for season 5 to start felt like forever, and I was not disappointed. Seeing Sam and Dean together again warmed my heart, in the same way Buffy used to, like old friends will. It was nice, followed by intense, followed by more intense. Then, for good measure, more intense.  This is going to be a good season for Supernatural, I can feel it. Definitely looking forward to the next episode. Oh! That is tomorrow!! Yay :)

AYFKM?

5 08 2009

That’s, Are You eFfing Kidding Me? (I made it up, but why not?) More to the point, however, this just came in from courtesy of a tweet from IGN:

“Supernatural: Paris Hilton Guest Starring
‘America’s Judi Dench’ to face the Winchester Brothers.
August 5, 2009 – Oh my. Noted thespian Paris Hilton (she had a hit video you might have seen?) will be guest starring on a show that IGN TV would argue is much cooler than she is, as the heiress/reality star will appear on The CW’s Supernatural this fall.”

Oh my, indeed. I sincerely hope this is a filthy lie. Unfortunately, it isn’t April 1st, so I can’t see any reason IGN would be spreading such rumours. Unless they hate me.

Post Comic Con Blues

29 07 2009

Due to extreme amounts of fun and endless things to do, I really didn’t get to blog as much as I would’ve like while at Comic Con, even with the free wifi throughout the Convention Centre. Consequently, I can’t possibly review everything I wanted to, so I’ll just stick to the best of the best.

The Robot Chicken panel, as I already mentioned, was funny as hell. I’ve been walking around replaying Breckin Meyer doing his Lindsay Lohan voice ever since. I actually lol’ed just thinking about it right now. That was on Thursday, as was the amazing screening of Dr. Horrible`s Sing Along Blog, to which Felicia Day, Maurissa Tancharoen, Jed and Zack Whedon showed up. If you don`t know who they are, might I suggest watching Dr. Horrible already. Great show, and great night!!

The day I spent in Ballroom 20 (Friday) was probably the best day ever of life. I went first thing in the morning to make sure I was in and well situated for the panels I wanted to see in the afternoon. As a byproduct of the wait, I got to see previews and discussions for Stargate Universe and Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, as well as the upcoming Battlestar-related Caprica tv series. I’ve never really gotten into either Stargate or Battlestar (though I loved the Stargate movie) but I was pretty intrigued by both panels, and I think I will finally get off my ass and watch Battlestar.

Following those panels was the cast from The Big Bang Theory. I adore the show, and as I have publicly admitted on many occasions, I am happily in love with Sheldon Cooper while fully understanding that he is not a real person. Obviously, the panel was amazing and I enjoyed myself immensely, but what impressed me most was how good looking they all are in person. Not that they are unattractive on the show by any means, but in real life, they’re all super hot! I don’t know how they can stand working together and remain professional, I’d be in trouble for shamelessly hitting on my coworkers for sure. The best part, though, was the actor who plays my beloved Sheldon. Jim Parsons is delightful! He’s clever and witty, and seemingly quite humble. My love for the fictional character was promptly transformed into a celebrity crush. I can even call him Jim now, instead of Sheldon!

I also sat through the panel for 24, which was cool. My fellow Canadian Kiefer Sutherland is still handsome as can be, and the girl who plays Chloe O’Brian (Mary Lynn Rajskub) was there. I like her. After 24 came Bones, which was kinda boring since I don’t watch it and David Boreanaz wasn’t even there. But no bother; I was waiting for Dollhouse, and I would have sat through pretty much anything. The previously un-aired 13th episode of Dollhouse was AMAZING! My gal Felicia Day was in it; she’s super cute, plus mega talented. The episode itself was intense, and the screening was followed up with a full hour and a half q&a with Joss Whedon and Eliza Dushku. Joss is so cool I can’t even stand it. Eliza is absolutely stunning and was most gracious with all the compliments she received. One adorable kid really thought she was Echo and asked how she could be in the show and in movies at the same time. Cute! Toward the end of the q&a, the actors who play Sierra (Dichen Lachman) and Topher (Fran Kranz) came out as well. He’s hot. There, I said it! I officially cannot wait for next season.

That brings me to Saturday, which I mostly spent in line for the Masquerade. I wore my super cool Silk Spectre II costume all day (photos below). Loads and loads of people took my picture. I felt like a minor celebrity and it was a lot of fun. I also took loads and loads of pictures of other people in costume, which was also fun. The Masquerade itself was pretty cool, though I’m not sure it was worth the wait and missing out on other stuff I would have liked to do – like get my Buffy comics autographed by Jane Espenson and Georges Jeanty. Ah, well, there’s always next year, right? Talents like those aren’t going anywhere any time soon, particularly since Espenson is working on Caprica, which is bound to be huge in 2010.

I did thoroughly enjoy some of the contestants in the Masquerade though, especially Bring it On: Rock the Mouse. If you missed it, check out the video on YouTube, though it doesn’t do the live show any justice at all. My honourable mention would go to Welcome to the Dollhouse, which was highly entertaining and so well done. It’s also on YouTube, but again, the video hardly gives the full effect. And finally, I fully appreciated the She-ra entry, because I loved her when I was young, and they did a wicked job on the costumes. YouTube again for the win on that video. (I truly love YouTube.)

And then, Sunday. Also known as The Day of My Biggest Disappointment, when Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles did not magically appear for the Supernatural panel. Not that they were supposed to, they were never on the schedule, I was just holding out hope that they might show up and surprise us all. No dice, however. The panel was still great though, everyone was pretty funny, it was cool to see the series creator (Eric Kripke), and we got a few good spoilers. The prophet Chuck is still around, which I love because he’s funny, and there was a lot of talk about Castiel’s changing role in season 5. The scene from Season 5, Episode 1 that they showed was pretty awesome as well. Also, Misha Collins (whom I’ve just realized I’ve been misspelling his name the past few weeks – sorry!) is super hot in person, fyi.

Whew. That takes care of that. Now for some awesome pics of me in my costume, some other cool costumes, and a hot guy dressed as Wolverine – proof hot guy nerds DO exist!!

Shameless Plug: Big, big thanks to Daniela Pizarro at Hypercube Apparel for making at kick ass costume! Everyone loved it! Daniela is a super talented designer based here in Toronto, Canada. Check out her website, and then find her clothes at The Fashion District on Queen West.

Sigh… back to reality and papers due next week. Sad face. On the bright side, only 11 months and three plus a little bit weeks until Comic-Con!!

Falling behind on the Sourcies

21 07 2009

Egad! With all the essay writing and Comic Con hubub, I`ve nearly forgotten about the Sourcies!

Let`s see, we had Best Couple, which went to One Tree Hill. Pfft. Whatevs. In the absence of an entry from Supernatural, it totally shoulda been Chuck and Blair.

BFF Moment went to Sam and Dean, of course! My boys are best at everything.

Best Finally! It`s About Time! moment went to Supernatural as well, no surprises there. Eff Ruby. I hate that girl.

I will skip over the Fashion Guru business, because it`s boring and there`s no option to pick Sam or Dean, even though Dean`s hot leather jacket is way better than anything anyone is wearing on One Tree Hill (which, btw, is probably the most boringest show ever).

Still open for voting is Hottest Moment. This category has me all conflicted. Not because I would choose Chuck and Blair over Sam and Dean. Not a chance, though Chuck definitely deserves to be in any category with the word hot in it. Rather, my conflict stems from having a tied entry for Sam and Ruby and Dean and Anna. Both scenes are hot, and I`m glad they`re both there. Yet when I watch the vid, I gotta say, though normally a Dean girl all the way, this scene with Sam and Ruby is waaaay hotter! Goodness me. I`m just… hold on, I`m going to watch it again.

Actually, just go vote, Imma be a while!
Sourcies :)

Making difficult decisions the week before Comic Con

15 07 2009

One week until San Diego Comic Con 2009! It’s enough to make a fangirl squeal with delight.

Literally, actually, *squeeeeeeeee!!*

So the programming schedule is of course out, complete with the autographs and films schedules. It took a while, but I have picked out all my must-sees. This was not an easy task, I tell you! There is, if you will pardon the expression, so much to do, and so little time. Nevertheless, here are my highlights-to-be, what I expected, what I was pleasantly surprised by, what I wont have time for, and (gasp) what – or, should I say, whom – I was severely disappointed to not see on the schedule:

The Satisfyingly Expected:

Although this will actually be my first trip to the Con, (shhhh, that doesn’t make me any less of a fangirl!) there were a bunch of things I had expected to find on the program. Even not having been before, I am familiar enough with the goings on at SDCC, plus I’ve jealously drooled over media coverage in previous years (a thank you, YouTube), then I’ve also made sure to be hip to the rumours since I bought my pass in February. So things I was expecting include panels on all the current on-air sci-fi tv programs: Heroes, Fringe, True Blood, Smallville, Supernatural, etc. I also knew to expect a lot of programming content based around my idol, Mr Joss Whedon. To that end, there will be a special screening of the unaired 13th episode of Dollhouse, which I have been super psyched about since I finished watching season one. Also, I was previously aware of the very popular weekend closer, the Buffy musical epi, Once More, With Feeling. I’m looking forward to dancing in the aisles with my dry cleaning! And, of course, I suspected I might also see lots and lots of programming having to do with comics ;)

The Pleasant Surprises:

One thing I did not expect to see, however, was a special presentation of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-Long Blog! I knew they had shown it at last year’s Con, but I wasn’t aware it was so loved that they’d bring it back again. I cannot tell you how happy this makes me; the California Browncoats surely do know what the fans like best! Wondering if we’ll catch a glimpse of TheRealNPH; that would so make my life! Other little surprises include a look at the upcoming film, The Hobbit – for whatever reason, I was not expecting it?! Fail on my part. Then there’s a really cool panel discussing Quantum Quest, which, if you haven’t heard, is set to be a mind blowing film featuring 3D/CGI/real imagery taken from from actual frickin space missions, and voiced over by some of the most awesomest people EVER! (I’m not excited about this at all, if you can’t tell.) Uhhh, where was I… oh yeah, more surprises like Seth Green chatting about Robot Chicken, heart heart heart! My boss thinks I should marry him, and then we will have the nerdiest kids ever. I’m cool with that. And theeennn, an academic discussion on the anthropological themes in Star Trek, where I suspect I might also be able to meet a potential future husband. And finally, the best surprise of all, the cast and crew of  The Big Bang Theory! I don’t even know how to adequately express how blown away I was to see that on the schedule. I will be in the same room as Sheldon Cooper!!! *eeeeeks!* <3

The Conflictingly Scheduled:

Sadly, Comic Con is only 4 days long. Well, actually it’s 5 days long if you’re cool like me and get to go to Wednesday’s Preview Night, but I digress… With such a limit on time, there were bound to be conflicts in the schedule, and so I will be forced to pass some things by. This time. One of the bigger hurts caused by such timing issues is missing out on Summit Entertainment’s sneak peeks at Astro Boy and New Moon. Astro Boy is such a flash back to my early, early childhood, and New Moon is, well, hot boys! Unfortunately, it cuts too close to Robot Chicken, and I heart Seth Green way more than any of those Twilight guys. Less upsetting, but nonetheless mildly sad face inducing, is having to miss out on the Archies Comics: Archie Marries Veronica panel. I haven’t really read Archie much since I was probably 13 or so, but this business of him proposing to Veronica is pretty huge. And upsetting. Poor Betty. But the panel starts too close to the ending of The Hobbit, so I’ll hafta let it go. Probably for the best, I’m pretty mad at Archie Andrews right now. I would also really have loved to attend Futurama’s Life or Death live decision making extraordinaire, if only to scowl at the dude from Fox because I am still angry about the Sarah Connor Chronicles debacle (though I haven’t given up hope yet, and neither have my friends over at savethescc.com), but it just isn’t in the cards. The Futurama event conflicts with the previously mentioned Quantum Quest, and I can’t have that!

The MAJOR Disappointment:

There was just the one, but I can’t even stress how MAJOR it is! The Supernatural Screening and Q&A seems to be lacking two names. Where are the stars of the show?! Ok, Bobby and Castiel (yum!) are there… but wtf, Sam and Dean?! I had to stare at the little blurb for a full two or three minutes, checking and rechecking. But, nope! No Jensen. No Jared. As my favourite still-running tv show, I won’t lie, of all the potentially exciting memories-to-be, I was MOST looking forward to seeing my boys. Alas, I can only hope that their names are not there because they are unconfirmed and the powers that be at Comic Con have decided it is better to leave them off than to have to severley disappoint and possibly anger fans AT the Con. This does not help the hole in my heart RIGHT NOW though. If I wasn’t so blessedly excited to see the guys from The Big Bang Theory on the programming schedule, I might actually be crying right now. *wipes a single, stray tear*

The Still Undecided:

And so I have one last conundrum… Saturday night: Watchmen or the Masquerade?! Two huge events. The first is the world premier of the director’s cut of Watchmen, which, admittedly, I will be able to see when it comes out on DVD. However, this screening will featuer Zack Snyder LIVE commentating. Dude. That’s huge. And Dave Gibbons and Jackie Earle Haley will be there too! AND, as if I could even take all that in one go, they will be starting the night with a sneak peek of Batman: Arkham Asylum along with a panel led by the voice actors – one of which is Mark Hamill. SRSLY. *Geekasm!* The Masquerade of course doesn’t have any of these overly awesome things happening, but it is THE Masquerade. It is, apparently, an amazing sight to see, with all the costumes and music and choreographed presentations… I’m not in it, because I’m shy like that, but I AM bringing a costume (which I had made for me, and will gush about in a separate blog at a later date) and it would probably be fun to wear it there and watch the show with a whole bunch of other people who love costuming too.

So what to do?! I have no idea.

Sourcies Update

More from the CW’s Sourcies… Of COURSE Sam and Dean took the Best Fight category, that was a bit of a no brainer.

A new category is open: Best Finally! It’s about time! Moment! Although I DID very much enjoy Chuck FINALLY telling Blair he loved her too, I loved it more when Dean FINALLY got to give that demon beehatch Ruby a taste of her own knife. At the moment, it looks like 2442 others agree with me :)

Best Couple and BFF Moment are still open, so go vote, babies! The Sourcies 2009
